Written
by Sanibel residents, Sanibel & Captiva: A Guide to the Islands
is a handbook to all the islands have to offer. It's filled with
useful information on where to go, what to see and how to have
fun on these "real-Florida" paradise islands. Separate
chapters provide in-depth but fascinating information on beaches,
shelling, wildlife, fishing, biking, boating and other pursuits.
Authors Julie and Mike Neal share their secrets about viewing
wildlife, revealing their favorite locations to spot dolphins,
manatees, birds, reptiles and other creatures. Readers discover
hidden bike paths and hiking trails, and even learn how to spot
alligator tracks.
Many readers
say the most compelling aspects of the book are its local flavor
and personal touches. There's an essay from a former Sanibel
mayor ranting about some tourists' disrespect and, occasionally,
downright stupidity, around alligators. A Sanibel teenager supplies
a poem about sunsets, while a retiree reflects on island life
senior-style. Restaurant reviews include surveys of island residents.
Julie includes two personal essays, one describing a dawn walk
at the beach and another recounting a morning fishing in San
Carlos Bay. Like any good guidebook, however, there are also
thorough listings of accommodations and shops, and detailed trip-planning
advice. Hundreds of color photographs, many quite beautiful,
make the book inviting and easy to read.
The second
edition has new information and photos in every chapter. "For
this edition," says Mike Neal, "we made a list of what
readers said they liked about the first book - the detail, tips,
trivia, feature stories and photos - and added more of the same.
The restaurant reviews have more meat to them. We updated the
information on attractions and accommodations, and added listings
and reviews of the islands' dozens of new shops and restaurants."
A new feature article tells the history of mermaids, while another
lists the favorite "beach reads" of island bookstores.

The
most comprehensive guide on the market. The book includes interviews
with residents and tourists about their favorite spots on the
islands. Lots of accommodation and dining information.

Guidebooks
are usually so impersonal. You get them for all the great info
they have - landmarks, hiking trails, available accommodations
- but don't really expect creativity, polls of local kids, and
poems. This guidebook *IS* a great guidebook, in that it contains
all the usual info/facts/contact numbers you'd want and expect.
But it goes so much further, and gives you such a feel for the
islands, in such a creative way. They poll the locals on the
best restaurants. You can bet where I'll be eating - at the locals'
favorite. They poll local kids on topics so you know what your
kids will want to do. They have essays and poems from locals
to impart real native flavor. Not only has this book given me
all I could want on Sanibel/Captiva, it's the best written and
most interesting guidebook I've ever seen!
Fantastic
guide to the islands!

I love
this book! My family is planning a second visit to Sanibel this
summer, and we have gotten so much helpful information from this
guide. The information and reviews are quite thorough; the pictures
are awesome! We can't wait to go back to the Islands and try
out some new sights, restaurants, and much more. Thank you, Neal
Family!
